Summer Internship Overcoming Performanceism

When we first started our internship, the department clearly told us three interns:
After three months, there will be a conversion defense, and only one of us will stay.

At the beginning, we didn't talk to each other.
The conversion seemed like a sword of Damocles hanging over our heads.

The three of us interns sat close to the boss, back to back.

At that moment, I felt like I was back in a certain day of my senior year, where everyone was competing and not talking to each other.

It seemed that once there were conflicts of interest, we couldn't become friends.
But on the first day I arrived there, I told myself not to be influenced by performance-oriented thinking. Everyone should compete fairly, and the internship conversion should proceed as it should.

One Friday, I asked them if they wanted to go eat together.
Sure!
Let's go to the 5th floor to eat.
Did you work at ByteDance before?
Yes.

Then, Friday became our fixed intern gathering day.

Three months later, we entered the conversion defense process. I thought there would be a fierce competition. However, intern A was the first to give up the defense; she clearly knew she wanted to go to a department that suited her better. Then it was just me and intern B participating in the assessment.

B and I prepared for the defense very seriously. One day I asked him, "Are you tired?"
"Yes, I've revised the PPT four times."
"Me too."

After the defense, we went to play basketball together and were informed that the results would be out in half a month.

Later we found out that because our backgrounds didn't match, the boss ultimately decided to look for candidates through campus recruitment.

So actually, the conversion defense wasn't important; the outcome was decided from the very beginning.

On intern A's last day, we had a meal together.
Maybe we will never see each other again in the future. I wish them happiness yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
